With the London Pact, signed in April 1915, Italy agreed to declare war against the Central Powers, in exchange for the " irredent " territories of Friuli, Trentino, and Dalmatia ( see " Italia irredenta " ).

More importantly, a radical nationalist political movement, called Unredeemed Italy ( " Italia irredenta " ), founded in the 1880s, started claiming the Italian-inhabited territories of Austria Hungary, especially in the Austrian Littoral and in the County of Tyrol.

The goal of the Italian leader, Benito Mussolini, was the elimination of Anglo-French domination in the Mediterranean, the reclamation of historically Italian territory ( so-called " Italia irredenta " ) and the expansion of Italian influence over the Balkans and in Africa.

Different movements or groups born in this period : in 1877 the Italian politician Matteo Renato Imbriani invented the new term " " terre irredente " " ( " unredeemed lands " ); in the same year the movement " Associazione in pro dell'Italia Irredenta " ( " Association for the Unredeemed Italy " ) was founded; in the 1885 was founded the " Pro Patria " movement ( " For Fatherland " ) and in 1891 the " " Lega Nazionale Italiana " " ( " Italian National League " ) was founded in Trento and Trieste ( in the Austrian Empire ).
