A "'power cord "', "'line cord "', or "'mains cable "'is a cable that temporarily connects an power plug to connect to a single-phase alternating current power source at the local line voltage & mdash; ( generally 100 to 240 volts, depending on the location ).

Transformer-less power supplies required safety precautions in their design to limit the shock hazard to users, such as electrically insulated cabinets and an interlock tying the power cord to the cabinet back, so the line cord was necessarily disconnected if the user or service person opened the cabinet.

I'm in complete agreement with the folks above that because certain faults "'could "'possibly lead to mains power being connected to the chassis, it's essential that things that have a safety ground pin on their line cord ( mains flex ) either be connected to an actual safety ground or be connected to the mains through a residual-current device ( ground fault circuit interrupter / GFCI ).
