The following state of significance was published in 1980 : This small park ( sic ) preserves a diversity of coastal communities ranging from coastal mallee scrub through to mangrove flats.

Before the less infertile soils were fertilised and developed for the production of wheat and barley the whole region was covered in a dense mallee scrub of deep-rooting eucalypts that regenerated after the frequent bushfires in the region.

As at Charlton Henry Edward worked as a farmer and building and roads contractor, conducting road works in and around the township, and overseeing on behalf of the council engineer the clearing of mallee scrub from different properties.

Botanist Ferdinand von Mueller first formally described the species in 1855 in " Transactions of the Philosophical Society of Victoria ", noting its occurrence in " the Mallee Scrub on the Murray River and Gulf St Vincent . " The name honours Hans Hermann Behr who first discovered the species.

Stanbridge befriended the Booroung people near Lake Tyrrell, and presented the results to Victoria's Scientific Community The possibilities are that the Borung Highway was named for this tribe, or as is written in the history of the town of Borung the town " takes its name from an Aboriginal word meaning the broad leafed mallee scrub"
