Two countries that have never used it routinely are the USA and the Netherlands ( in both countries, it is felt that having a reliable Mantoux test and being able to accurately detect active disease is more beneficial to society than vaccinating against a condition that is now relatively rare there ).

Given that the US recommendation is that prior BCG vaccination be ignored in the interpretation of tuberculin skin tests, false positives with the Mantoux test are possible as a result of : ( 1 ) having previously had a BCG ( even many years ago ), and / or ( 2 ) periodical testing with tuberculin skin tests.
