Avery 's celebrated experiment with the bacteria that cause lobar pneumonia , the pneumococcus , in 1946 . जीवाणुओं तथा प्रजीवाणुओं में होने वाले परिवर्तन भी उन्नत जीवों तथा पौधों में होने वाले परिवर्तनों के समान ( उत्परिवर्तन ) ही होते हैं.इस बात की सही जानकारी हमें ओ.टी.एवेरी ने पालीशोथ1 उत्पन्न करने वाले न्यूमोकॉकस नामक जीवाणुओं पर जो प्रयोग किये उनसे प्राप्त हुई.1946 में किये गये प्रयोगों द्वारा उसने एक किस्म के न्यूमाकॉकस जीवाणुओं को दूसरी किस्म के जीवाणुओं में परिवर्तित कर लोगों का ध्यान अपने अनुसंधान कार्य की और आकर्षित किया .
