On either side of the symphysis, just below the incisor teeth, is a depression, the incisive fossa, which gives origin to the mentalis and a small portion of the orbicularis oris.

The embouchure is produced with the muscles around the lips : principally the orbicularis oris muscle and the zygomaticus major, which will produce a smile, flattening the top lip against the maxillary ( upper jaw ) teeth.

One of these is inserted into the greater alar cartilage and skin of the nose; the other is prolonged into the lateral part of the upper lip, blending with the infraorbital head and with the Orbicularis oris.

The orbicularis oris ( the sphincter muscle around the mouth ) is used in the playing of brass and woodwind instruments; as a result, players of these instruments tend to have a larger muscle around the mouth and may experience more discomfort during the piercing process.

The fibers converge toward the angle of the mouth, where the central fibers intersect each other, those from below being continuous with the upper segment of the orbicularis oris, and those from above with the lower segment; the upper and lower fibers are continued forward into the corresponding lip without decussation.

Some of these questions are geared toward tongue protrusion and an opening of lips when the client is in repose; habitual mouth breathing; digit sucking; existence of high and narrow palatal arch; ankyloglossia ( tongue-tie ); malocclusions, ( Class II, III ); weak chewing muscles ( masseter ); weak lip muscles ( orbicularis oris ); overdeveloped chin muscles ( mentalis ); muscular imbalance; abnormal dentition.
