Although ambergris is produced in the digestive tract of the sperm whale ( " Physeter catodon "; " P . macrocephalus " ), it was believed by the ancients of Israel to be derived from a " sea-creature " which fed on an underwater aromatic tree, and which later it expectorated and was washed ashore.

Like the Sperm Whale genus " Physeter ", " Orcinus " is a genus with a single, abundant species with no immediate relatives from a cladistic point of view, thus paleontologists believe that the orca is a prime candidate to have an anagenetic evolutionary history & mdash; that is the evolution of ancestral to descendant species without splitting of the lineage.

This ongoing project focuses on the ecology and conservation of the cetacean fauna occurring in the area, which includes the fin whale ( " Balaenoptera physalus " ), the sperm whale ( " Physeter macrocephalus " ), the long-finned pilot whale ( " Globicephala melas " ), the Risso s dolphin ( " Grampus griseus " ), the Cuvier's beaked whale ( " Ziphius cavirostris " ), the striped dolphin ( " Stenella coeruleoalba " ), the common bottlenose dolphin and, to a lesser extent, the short-beaked common dolphin ( " Delphinus delphis " ).
