Complicating the situation is the fact the best picture field contains two other films that have striking similarities to the front-runners : " The Thin Red Line, " a second WWII combat film, and " Elizabeth, " a second Elizabethan period piece ( ironically with two of the same stars as " Shakespeare " ).
