Although there are isolated case reports of placenta accreta being diagnosed in the first trimester or at the time of abortion < 20 weeks'gestational age, the predictive value of first-trimester ultrasound for this diagnosis remains unknown.

As major abdominal surgery, hysterotomy is performed under general anaesthesia, and is only used in rare situations where less invasive procedures have failed or are medically inadvisable ( such as in the case of placenta accreta ).

Patients who carry a pregnancy even after treatment of IUA may have an increased risk of having abnormal placentation including placenta accreta where the placenta invades the uterus more deeply, leading to complications in placental separation after delivery.

The risk of placenta accreta, a potentially life-threatening condition which is more likely to develop where a woman has had a previous caesarean section, is 0.13 % after two caesarean sections, but increases to 2.13 % after four and then to 6.74 % after six or more.

This process is highly regulated due to detrimental consequences that can arise from aberrations of the placentation process : poor infiltration of the trophoblasts may result in preeclampsia while severely invasive trophoblasts may resolve in placenta accreta, increta or percreta; all defects which most likely would result in the early demise of the embryo and / or negative effects upon the mother.
