These Islamist threats extend a drama begun on Valentine's Day, 1989 when Ayatollah Khomeini issued his death edict against Rushdie, stating that “the author of the book entitled The Satanic Verses - which has been compiled, printed, and published in opposition to Islam, the Prophet, and the Qur'an and all those involved in its publication who were aware of its content, are sentenced to death. I call on all zealous Muslims to execute them quickly.” सबसे आश्चर्यजनक घटना क्रम में पाकिस्तान धार्मिक मामलों के मंत्री इजाज उल हक ने संयुक्त राज्य ब्रिटेन के विरूद्ध आत्मघाती हमलों को मान्य किया। “जब तक ब्रिटेन की सरकार ‘सर ' की उपाधि लेकर क्षमा याचना नहीं करती तब तक अपने शरीर पर कोई विस्फोटक बाँध कर आक्रमण करता है तो यह उचित होगा ''।

The era of Islamist uproar began abruptly on February 14, 1989, when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Iran's supreme leader, watched on television as Pakistanis responded with violence to a new novel by Salman Rushdie, the famous writer of South Asian Muslim origins. His book's very title, The Satanic Verses , refers to the Koran and poses a direct challenge to Islamic sensibilities; its contents further exacerbate the problem. Outraged by what he considered Rushdie's blasphemous portrait of Islam, Khomeini issued an edict whose continued impact makes it worthy of quotation at length: I inform all zealous Muslims of the world that the author of the book entitled The Satanic Verses - which has been compiled, printed, and published in opposition to Islam, the Prophet, and the Koran - and all those involved in the publication who were aware of its contents, are sentenced to death. इस क्रम में मैं दो बिन्दुओं के बारे में चर्चा करना चाहूँगा। पहला तो यह कि पश्चिम का इस्लाम और मुसलमानों के बारे में चर्चा करने , उनकी आलोचना करने और यहाँ तक कि उसे चिढाने का अधिकार क्षीण हुआ है। दूसरा, अभिव्यक्ति की स्वतंत्रता समस्या का अत्यंत छोटा पहलू है दाँव पर कुछ कहीं अधिक लगा है जो कि निश्चय ही हमारे समय का सबसे मह्त्वपूर्ण प्रश्न है, क्या पश्चिमी लोग अपनी ऐतिहासिक सभ्यता को इस्लामवादी आक्रमण के समक्ष बरकरार रख पायेंगे या फिर वे इस्लामी संस्कृति और कानून के समक्ष समर्पण कर द्वितीय श्रेणी के नागरिक होकर रह जायेंग़ॆ?
