The Leuprecht-Winn study reveals a number of problematic attitudes, from desire for Shari'a to support for Al-Qaeda, but it also establishes that Canada has the most moderate, diverse, and open Muslim population in the West. Popular criticism of the amendment vacillates between two contradictory responses, claiming it's either discriminatory or superfluous. Discriminatory? While the wording is indeed problematic (international law cannot possibly be banned; and the Sharia should not be singled out by name), State Question 755 correctly insists that judges base their judgments solely on U.S. law. Contrary to rumor, the amendment does not ban Sharia outside the court system: Muslims may wash, pray, eat, drink, play, swim, woo, marry, reproduce, bequeath, etc., according to the tenets of their religion. Last February, a grand jury indicted three Middle East specialists associated with the University of South Florida on charges of being “material supporters of a foreign terrorist organization,” namely Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Abu Sway's Fulbright award presents another example of connections to Islamist terrorism becoming acceptable and almost routine in Middle Eastern studies - one of several reasons why it is perhaps the most problematic of any academic field. What to make of this initiative? Serious efforts to modernize Islam, which this appears to be, are most welcome. At the same time, one has to wonder about agendas when government intercedes in the subtle and even subversive domain of religious reform. Specifically, the AKP's Islamist nature arouses mistrust that the Hadith Project will limit itself to the relatively easy social issues and avoid the tougher political ones in order to fashion an ideologically more defensible Islam even while maintaining some of its more problematic aspects. Does the project's avoidance of the headscarf topic also imply its not taking up female legal rights, women marrying non-Muslim men, ribba (interest on money), jihad, the rights of non-Muslims, and the creation of an Islamic order? By limiting its subject matter, the project might forward Islamism more than modernize Islam.
