While the historical notion of a profilometer was a device similar to a phonograph that measures a surface as the surface is moved relative to the contact profilometer's stylus, this notion is changing with the emergence of numerous non-contact profilometery techniques.

The department possesses the following sophisticated instruments for research : Thickness Profilometer, Differential Scanning Calorimeter, HRXRD, XPS, FTIR, FESEM . These facilities are thrown open for users within and outside the state on nominal charges depending on the availability of the instrument time.

Roughness can be measured by manual comparison against a " surface roughness comparator ", a sample of known surface roughnesses, but more generally a surface profile measurement is made with a profilometer that can be contact ( typically a diamond stylus ) or optical ( e . g . a white light interferometer or laser scanning confocal microscope ).

BRISK was a coordinated operation between the Royal Navy and The Canadian Forces Maritime Proving & Evaluation Unit ( MP & EU ) from CFB Summerside PEI . MP & EU was in a 6 year project of evaluating airborne remote sensing devices including a SLAR, IRLS and a Laser Profilometer which were all used to do imaging during the Sovereigns through ice surfacing.

Amongst the infrastructure FCIPT has a full-fledged material characterization laboratory with instruments such as Transmission Electron Microscope, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope with EDAX, Atomic Force Microscope, X-ray diffractometer, Spectroscopic Ellipsometer, UV-VIS spectroscopy, Solar Simulator, thickness profilometer, optical metallurgical microscope with phase analyser, full-fledged metallography laboratory, Vicker's hardness tester, ASTM B117 corrosion testing setup, etc . Other infrastructure include electronics and instrumentation lab, process demonstration systems, etc.
