The development of technical know-how for sponge iron and steel plants based on direct reduction process , optimisation of blast furnaces , operating parameters for increasing hot metal production and development of manufacture of refractories and equipment with indigenous know-how are some of the areas in which the organisation is conducting research and development . सीधी ह्रास प्रक्रिया , वर्तमान विस्फोट भट्ठियों का सर्वोत्तम उपयोग , गर्म धातु उत्पादन में वृद्धि के लिए ( पैरामीटर ) संचालन तथ स्वदेशी जानकारी से अपवर्तकों और उपकरणों के निर्माण के विकास पर आधारित स्पंज लोहे और इस्पात संयंत्रों के लिए तकनीकी ज्ञान का विकास , आदि कुछ ऐसे क्षेत्र हैं जिनमें यह संस्था अनुसंधान और विकास के कार्य कर रही है .
