By this time, Hindustani had become the general public's language. To distinguish themselves from the general masses, the learned Muslims used to write in Urdu (filled with Persian and Arabic vocabulary), while Khadiboli became prominent among educated Hindus. Khadiboli with heavily Sanskritized vocabulary or Sahityik Hindi (Literary Hindi) was popularized by the writings of Swami Dayananda Saraswati, Bhartendu Harishchandra and others. Bhartendu Harishchandra preferred Braj Bhasha for poetry, but for prose, he deliberately used Khadiboli. Other important writers of this period are Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi, Maithili Sharan Gupt, R N Tripathi and Gopala Sharan Sinha. The rising numbers of newspapers and magazines made Khadiboli popular among the educated people. Chandrakanta, written by Devaki Nandan Khatri, is considered the first authentic work of prose in the Adhunik kaal (modern period). A story of magical characters, kings and kingdoms, it reminds one of The Lord of the Rings series and was successfully manifested into an eponymous TV Serial.The person who brought realism in the Hindi prose literature was Munshi Premchand, who is considered as the most revered figure in the world of Hindi fiction and progressive movement. Before Premchand, the Hindi literature revolved around fairy or magical tales, entertaining stories and religious themes. Premchand's novels have been translated into many other languages. साहित्य के क्षेत्र में उत्तर प्रदेश का स्थान सर्वोपरि है. साहित्य और भारतीय सेना दो ऐसे क्षेत्र हैं जिनमे उत्तर प्रदेश निवासी गर्व कर सकते हैं. आदि कवी वाल्मीकि तुलसीदास कबीरदास सूरदास से लेकर भारतेंदु हरिश्चंद्र आचार्य महावीर प्रसाद द्विवेदी आचर्य राम चन्द्र शुक्ल प्रेमचंद जयशंकर प्रसाद निराला पन्त बच्चन महादेवी वर्मा मासूम राजा अज्ञये जैसे इतने महान कवि और लेखक हुए हैं उत्तर प्रदेश में कि पूरा पन्ना ही भर जाये. उर्दू साहित्य में भी बहुत ही महत्वपूर्ण योगदान रहा है उत्तर प्रदेश का. फिराक़ जोश मलीहाबादी चकबस्त जैसे अनगिनत शायर उत्तर प्रदेश ही नहीं वरन देश की शान रहे हैं. हिंदी साहित्य का क्षेत्र बहुत ही व्यापक रहा है और मानवीय संवेदना और राष्ट्र प्रेम की भावन से ओत-प्रोत रहा है. येद्दपि पक्षपातपूर्ण व्यवहार के चलते हिंदी के साहित्यकारों को नोबेल पुरस्कार नहीं मिला फिर भी उनकी सराहना करना वालो की कोई कमी नहीं है. लुग्गादी साहित्य भी यहाँ खूब पढ़ा जाता है.
