The NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines and a breakaway group, the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade, have a presence in some areas of southern Mindanao region, where Muslim rebels have also been waging a war to establish a separate Islamic state.

The Party, as well as the armed group Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade, is known to be a " Rejectionist " Faction of the CPP-NPA due to its ideological differences with the latter, especially during the expulsion of 10, 000 members from 1992 to 1993, the expulsion of former CPP member R�mulo Tabara, as well as the ex-secretary of the CPP's Metro Manila-Rizal Committee Filem�n " Popoy " Lagm�n.
