In the " 1951 Recommendations " the commission recommended a maximum permissible dose of 0.5 rontgen in any 1 week in the case of whole-body exposure to X and gamma radiation at the surface, and 1.5 rontgen in any 1 week in the case of exposure of hands and forearms.

The x-ray was performed at Royal College of Science for Ireland ( this building is now the Department of the Taoiseach ) and the operation was carried out at Dr Steevens'Hospital just four months after Rontgen's discover of X-Rays ( called'Shadow-graphs'at the time ).

But in 1895, Wilhelm Rontgen, a German, discovered that when a very high voltage is used to produce the cathode rays in an evacuated glass tube and the rays are directed at a piece of tungsten or other heavy material, the spot struck by the cathode rays radiates a different kind of ray _ one that can penetrate solid matter.
