The Gulf of Papua forms a broad shelf with a maximum width of about 150 km between the shelf break, at about 140 m water depth, and the Fly Delta.

The Pioneer Array provides a three-dimensional view of key biophysical interactions at the shelf break using its flexible, multiplatform array that combines moored and mobile components with high spatial and temporal resolution.

In Antarctica, there is clear evidence of ice shelf break-up and warmer temperatures on some sections of the continent, yet in others temperatures remain cold, and satellite measurements show a trend to more sea ice since 1977.

Autonomous underwater vehicles ( AUVs ) sample the frontal region in the vicinity of the moored array and gliders resolve mesoscale features on the outer shelf and the slope sea between the shelf break front and the Gulf Stream.

It begins as a natural channel of several kilometers width, starting as a 20-40 m depression at Hudson Channel southward from Ambrose Light, then carving through a deep notch of about 1 km depth in the shelf break, and running down the continental rise.

The Geological Society has a book entry which includes a paper on " Rhodolith facies evolution and burial as a response to Holocene transgression at the Pontian Islands shelf break, D . Basso, C . Morbioli, C . Corselli " ( Cool-Water Carbonates : Depositional Systems and Palaeoenvironmental Controls, GSL Special Publications, 11 March 2006 ) at

Finally, focused mapping operations at Hendrickson, Toms, and Berkeley Canyons covered approximately 1400 square kilometers of seafloor, including 85 percent of the third NEFSC priority area . While transiting along the continental shelf break between focused mapping areas, multibeam, single beam, and sub-bottom sonar data was collected, adding to the seafloor mapping coverage established on Okeanos Explorer cruise EX1106.
