The incisive foramen receives the nasopalatine nerves from the floor of the nasal cavity along with the sphenopalatine artery supplying the mucous membrane covering the hard palate of the mouth.

Each palatine bone somewhat resembles the letter L, and consists of a sphenoidal process, which surmount the vertical part, and are separated by a deep notch, the sphenopalatine notch.

The vacuities in " Reithrodon ", formerly considered a phyllotine, are especially large . " Nyctomys " is special in having sphenopalatine vacuities restricted to the basisphenoid bone.
