Ground flora and the thick layer of litter and humus in the forests act as sponge and help retain the water received in the form of rain or through the melting of snow ; this prevents floods in the plains . वनों में धरती पर पाए जाने वाले छोटे-छोटे पौधे , जमीन पर गिरी हुई पत्तियों की मोटी तह और खाद-मिट्टी स्पंज का काम करती है तथा बरसात एवं बर्फ के पिघलने से आए पानी को बचाकर रखने में सहायता करती है .

The industry itself needs restructuring so that the constituent units can grow to a viable size , update technologies and gear themselves up for new challenges offered by emerging technologies for sponge iron , intensive reduction , ladle refining , etc . उद्योग को अपने मौलिक ढांचे में परिवर्तित करने की आवश्यकता है जिससे कि इसकी इकाइयां एक अच्छे आकार तथा आधुनिकतम प्रौद्योगिकी के साथ उत्थान कर सके और स्पंज आयरन , इंटेंसिव रिडक़्शन , लेडले रिफाइनिंग आदि के लिए नयी-नयी तकनीकों द्वारा दी गयी चुनौतियों का सामना करने के लिए स्वयं को तैयार कर सके .

The development of technical know-how for sponge iron and steel plants based on direct reduction process , optimisation of blast furnaces , operating parameters for increasing hot metal production and development of manufacture of refractories and equipment with indigenous know-how are some of the areas in which the organisation is conducting research and development . सीधी ह्रास प्रक्रिया , वर्तमान विस्फोट भट्ठियों का सर्वोत्तम उपयोग , गर्म धातु उत्पादन में वृद्धि के लिए ( पैरामीटर ) संचालन तथ स्वदेशी जानकारी से अपवर्तकों और उपकरणों के निर्माण के विकास पर आधारित स्पंज लोहे और इस्पात संयंत्रों के लिए तकनीकी ज्ञान का विकास , आदि कुछ ऐसे क्षेत्र हैं जिनमें यह संस्था अनुसंधान और विकास के कार्य कर रही है .
