But in the Delhi Sultanate to follow or not to follow the Shariah depended on the sweet will of the Sultan in his private life as well as in the administration of the state . किंतु दिल्ली सल्तनत में सुल्तान के निजि जीवन तथा राज़्य के प्रशासन में शरिया का मानना या न मानना , उनकी मधुर इच्छा पर निर्भर करता था .

The first half of the thirteenth century , when the Delhi Sultanate was taking shape , was on the whole one of distress and disintegration for the Eastern Islamic world . तेरहवी शताब्दी के प्रथम अर्द्ध भाग में , जबकि दिल्ली सल्तनत स्वरूप ग्रहण कर रहा था , पूर्वी इस्लामी दुनिया के लिए कुल मिलाकर एक संकट और विघटन का समय था .

There was much more intimate intercourse and harmony of feelings and ideas between Hindus and Muslims in the smaller Muslim states which made themselves independent towards the end of this period than in the Delhi Sultanate . दिल्ली सल्तनत की अपेक्षा छोटे मुसलमान राज़्यों में हिंदू और मुसलमानो के बीच विचारों और भावनाओं भावनाओं में बहुत अधिक समीपता और सामंजस्य Zथा , जिसने उन्हें इस काल के अंत तक स्वतंत्र बना दिया था .

The Muslim middle-classes had , at least in northern India , depended mainly on zamindari or jagirdari and state services for their livelihood , throughout the seven and a half centuries since the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate , to the present day . मुसलमान मध्यम श्रेणी के लोग कम उत्तर भारत में जीविका के लिए मुख़्यता जमींदारी या भागीदारी तथा राज़्य सेवाओं , पर , दिल्ली सल्तनत की स्थापना की स्थापना से आज के समय तक पूरे साढ़े सात शताब्दियों तक निर्भर करते रहे .

Public charity and moral reform , which the Delhi Sultanate had handled only perfunctorily in the limited field of Muslim society , were now carried on systematically and their scope extended to cover all citizens without distinction . जन-कल्याण और नैतिक उद्वार के कार्य जिन्हें दिल्ली सल्तनत न मुसलमान समाज के सीमित क्षेत्र में यत्रवत् चलाया था.अब सुव्यवस्थित ढंग से चलाये जाने लगे और उसका कार्यक्षेत्र बढ़ा दिया गया जिससे कि नागरिकों को बिना किसी भेदभाव के उसमे लगाया जा सके .

The Delhi Sultanate was ruled by several Muslim dynasties one after another for about 300 years though its extent varied from almost the whole of India under Alauddin Khilji to a very small area surrounding the city of Delhi under the Syeds . दिल्ली सल्तनत पर लगभग 300 वर्षो तक , एक के बाद दूसरे , अनेक मुसलमान वंश के राजाओं ने राज़्य किया.उन राजाओं के राज्य का विस्तार भिन्न भिन्न था.जहां अलाउद्दीन खिलजी के Zअधीन करीब करीब संपूर्ण भारत था , तो सैय्दों के अधीन दिल्ली के आसपास का बहुत छोटा क्षेत्र था .

But though the Delhi , Sultanate had given political unity to India the Hindus could not regard it as their own state because the rulers , with the exception of Sikandar Lodi and Sher Shah Suri , made no positive attempt to bridge the gulf between themselves and their Hindu subjects . यद्यपि दिल्ली सल्तनत ने भारत का राजनैति एकता दी , किंतु हिंदु उसे अपना स्वयं का राज़्य नहीं मान सके , क़्योकि सिकंदर लोदी और शेरशाह सूरी को छोड़कर शासकों ने उनके और उनकी हिंदू प्रजा के बीच की खाई को पाटने के लिए सकारात्मक प्रयत्न नहीं किए .

In the very first century of the Delhi Sultanate , a Hindu-Muslim style of architecture had come int6 being which was adopted in the fourteenth century with various degrees of modification by the independent Muslim kings of Bengal , Gujarat and the Deccan and also by the Hindu rajas of Bundelkhand and Rajasthan . दिल्ली सल्तनत की प्रथम शताब्दी में ही , हिंदू मुसलमान शैली की वास्तुकला अस्तित्व में आयी , जिसे 14वीं शताब्दी में विभिन्न स्तर के सुधारों के साथ बंगाल , गुजरात और दक्षिण के स्वतंत्र मुसलमान शासको तथा बुंदेलखंड और राजस्थान के हिंदू शासको द्वारा अपनाया गया .

As we have shown , the Delhi Sultanate was not an Islamic state , and even if it had been one , it had no right to impose the Jizya because the latter was meant by the rulers of the early Islamic state to be the price of exemption from compulsory military service which no longer existed . जैसाकि हमने दर्शाया है कि दिल्ली सल्तनत एक इस्लामी राज़्य नहीं था , और यदि वह रहा भी हो , तो उसे त्रिज़्या कर लगाने का कोई अधिकार नहीं था.क़्योकिं प्रारंभिक इस्लामी राज़्य के शासको ने त्रिज़्या अनिवार्य सैनिक सेवा से छूट प्राप्त करने की कीमत के रूप में लगाया था , जो अग लागू नहीं था .
