Oliphant sat on the assize for the trial of James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell for the murder of Darnley, signed the Ainslie Tavern Bond for Bothwell's marriage to the queen, and was one of the nine temporal lords present at the marriage.

In an extremely grave crisis, teetering towards civil war, 1386-8, the bishop found himself, at least in formal terms, right at the front of the dangerous attempts by five leading temporal lords to purge the king's advisors and control future policy.

From 994 the bishop of that city became also its temporal lord, even after it was politically incorporated into the Republic of Venice in 1389 . In 1447 and in 1514 bishops Francesco and Oliviero gave the republic civil investiture of the territory of Ceneda, reserving for themselves and their successors ( until about 1768 ) authority over the city and a few villas.

An early action in his capacity as a temporal lord was to subscribe to the letter to Pope Clement VII seeking his compliance with the King's proposed divorce from Queen Jane in 1536, and greeted Anne of Cleves at Blackheath in 1539 . Perhaps over-emboldened by his wealth and position, he was often litigious on behalf of his various estates and did not fear to challenge men of influence.

On 29 April 1462, a Papal Indult was granted to George Lauder, Bishop of Argyll, who had petitioned the Pope requesting that he be permitted to reside outwith his diocese, in Glasgow, or some other suitable place not more than two days ride from his diocese, for seven years " on account of strife rageing between temporal lords and other magnates of his diocese, and the tumults of wars and dangers arising therefrom, and is unable to reside in Argyll ".
