Athens had a naval base on the island in the fifth and fourth century BC . Demosthenes mentions Apollodorus, a trierarch commanding a ship, talking of buying food during a stopover at Tenedos where he would pass the trierarchy to Polycles.

That battle was a major Athenian victory; after the battle, the generals in charge took the majority of their ships to attack the Peloponnesian fleet blockading Conon, leaving behind a force under Thrasybulus and his fellow trierarch Theramenes to rescue the survivors.

The trierarch was also to assume, under the direction of the " strategos ", the command of the ship, unless he choose to pay a concession and left the fighting to a specialist in which case the office was purely financial.

A fleet of this size ( 80 ships remained at Notium after Alcibiades'departure ) would traditionally have been commanded by several generals, or at the least by a trierarch; Alcibiades'unconventional decision has been widely criticized by both ancient and modern authors.

Ophellas's name is first mentioned as a trierarch of the fleet on the Indus in 326 BC . After the death of Alexander, he followed the fortunes of Ptolemy I Soter, by whom he was sent, in 322 BC, at the head of a considerable army, to take advantage of the civil war which had broken out in Cyrenaica.

Among the things expected of wealthy Athenians, besides special war taxes and religious obligations, were the production of comic and tragic dramas, paying for choral competitions, dancers, athletic contests, trireme races, equipping triremes for battle in the war, serving in positions such as " trierarch ", and contributing to the " eisphora ", a tax on the wealth of the very rich, levied only when needed usually in times of war.

However, the age of the Tyrant does not fit with the context of the latter speech : he must have been aged at least 18 in 411 BC to have served as a trierarch, and at least 30 by the time of the Thirty Tyrants period in 403 / 2 BC . But " On the Murder of Eratosthenes " suggests that the Eratosthenes referred to in that speech was younger than 30 at the time of his death he is described as'neaniskos', a word which Lysias elsewhere uses to refer to younger men.
