Jawaharlal Nehru 's comment on this controversy is worth recalling : ” During my tour in the earthquake areas , or just before going there , I read with a great shock Gandhiji 's statement to the effect that the earthquake had been a punishment for the sin of untouchability . इस विषय में जवाहरलाल नेहरू की यह उक्ति महत्वपूर्ण हैं , ? मैं जब भूकंपग्रस्त क्षेत्रों में घूम रहा था या वहां जाने के थोड़े समय पहले गांधी जी के बयान पढ़कर मैं हैरान रह गया कि अस्पृश्यता के पाप के फलस्वरूप यह भूकंप आया है .

The blight of caste is not only untouchability and the consequent deification in India of filth ; the blight , in an India that tries to grow , is also the over-all obedience it imposes , its readymade satisfactions , the diminishing of adventurousness , the pushing away from men of individuality and the possibility of excellence . जाति व्यवस्था का अभिशाप सिर्फ अस्पृश्यता और गंदगी को मान्यता ही नहीं है , उसका अभिशाप ( जो भारत में फैल रहा है ) उसकी सर्वव्यापी स्वीकार्यता , उससे उपजने वाल संतुष्टि-भाव और दुस्साहसिक कार्यों की संभावना का क्षीण होना है.यह आदमी को उसकी निजता और उन्नति की संभावना से दूर कर देती है .

Under the Representation of the People Act , 1951 , if a person has been convicted , among other things , for promoting enmity between different groups or convicted for the offence of bribery or has been punished for preaching and practising social crimes such as untouchability , dowry and sati , then he is disqualified from being chosen as a member . लोक प्रतिनिधित्व Zअधिनियम , 1951 के अधीन यदि कोई व्यक़्ति अन्य बातों के साथ साथ विभिन्न संप्रदायों के बीच शत्रुता को बढ़ावा देने के लिए कारण दोषसिद्ध किया गया हो या घूस के अपराध के लिए दोषसिद्ध किया गया हो , या अस्पृश्यता का प्रचार करने और उसका पालन करने के कारण दंडित किया गया हो तो वह सदस्य के रूप में चुने जाने से अनर्ह होता है .

Tagore was shocked to see the Mahatma resort to such a characteristically priestly tactic of exploiting the conception of sin to din fear in the minds of the people and said in a public statement : ” It has caused me a painful surprise to find Mahatma Gandhi accusing those who blindly follow their own social custom of untouchability of having brought down God 's vengeance upon certain parts of Bihar , evidently specially selected for His desolating displeasure . . ऋ महात्मा द्वारा पुरोहितों की तरह साधारण लोगों के मन में पाप भर डालने के इस प्रयत्न को देखकर रवीन्द्रनाथ चकित रह गए . उन्होंने एक जनसभा में कहा , ऋमुझे इस बात का बहुत दुख है कि महात्मा उन लोगों को दोषी ठहरा रहे हैं जो लोग अस्पृश्यता के सामाऋक विधानों का आंख मूंद कर पालन कर रहे हैं और उनके इस आचरण से कुपित होने के कारण ऋश्वर के दंडस्वरूप बिहार के कुछ हिस्सों में यह भूकंप आया है , विशेष रूप से ऋश्वर ने इसी जगह को चुना है .
