The objective of the scheme was to modernize indigenous agriculture by assigning plots of land to individual families and providing those with government support in the form of selected seeds, agronomic advice, fertilizers, etc . The National Institute for Agronomic Research in the Congo ( INEAC-Institut Nationale pour l'Etude Agronomique au Congo belge ), created in 1934, with its large experimental plantations and laboratories in Yangambe, played an important role in crop selection and in the vulgarisation of agronomic research.
