The agreement they signed, the “Declaration of Principles on Interim Self-Government Arrangements” (to use its formal name) inspired widespread optimism that the Arab-Israeli conflict was at last about to be resolved. Other than a hardy band of skeptics, the world saw in the Oslo accords a brilliant solution whereby each side would achieve what it most wanted: dignity and autonomy for the Palestinians, recognition and security for the Israelis. उन्होंने अंतरिम स्वशासन व्यवस्था के सिद्धांतों की घोषणा के समझौते पर हस्ताक्षर किये और इससे चतुर्दिक आशावादी वातावरण व्याप्त हो गया कि संभवत: अरब इजरायल विवाद का समाधान होने वाला है । कुछ आशंकाओं को छोड़ दिया जाए तो ओस्लो समझौते में शानदार समाधान था जहां प्रत्येक पक्ष को वह मिला जो वह अधिकतम चाहता था ।

First, the compromise suggests that while all of the Sharia may not be put into place, every law must conform with it. As one pro-Sharia source put it, “We got what we wanted, which is that there should be no laws that are against Islam.” The new Iraq may not be Saudi Arabia or Iran, but it will include substantial portions of Islamic law. प्रथम,समझौते से ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि यद्यपि समस्त शरियत को लागू नही किया जायेगा परन्तु सभी कानूनों को इसकी सहमती में होना चाहिए। जैसा कि एक शरियत समर्थक स्रोत ने कहा, “ हमें वह मिल गया जो हम चाहते थे और वह यह कि ऐसा कोई भी कानून नहीं होगा जो इस्लाम के विरुद्ध हो । नया इराक सउदी अरब या ईरान तो नहीं होगा परन्तु इसमें इस्लामी कानून का महत्वपूर्ण भाग शामिल होगा ।“
