The expansion programme of Indian Iron envisaged the raising of its capacity to 700,000 tonnes of saleable steel and 400.000 tonnes of pig iron , or , in the alternative , to 620,000 tonnes of steel and 500,000 tonnes of pig iron . इंडियन आयरन के विस्तार कार्यक्रम में इसकी क्षमता को 7,00,000 टन विक्रय योग़्य इस्पात और 4,00,000 टन ढलवां लोहे तक बढ़ाने की योजना बनायी गयी , अथवा , विकल्प के रूप में 6,20,000 टन इस्पात और 5,00,000 टन ढलवां लोहा .

Electric arc furnaces , popularly known as ' mini steel plants ' , shot into prominence during the period of acute shortage of steel in the early seventies . लघु इसऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-पात संयंत्र तथा सऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-पंज आयरन लघु इसऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-पात संयंत्र के नाम से प्रसिद्ध , विद्युत भट्ठी इकाइयां , सातवें दशक के प्रारंभ में इसऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-पात की अतऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-यधिक कमी के दऋरान काफी विख़्यात हो गया .

The industry itself needs restructuring so that the constituent units can grow to a viable size , update technologies and gear themselves up for new challenges offered by emerging technologies for sponge iron , intensive reduction , ladle refining , etc . उद्योग को अपने मौलिक ढांचे में परिवर्तित करने की आवश्यकता है जिससे कि इसकी इकाइयां एक अच्छे आकार तथा आधुनिकतम प्रौद्योगिकी के साथ उत्थान कर सके और स्पंज आयरन , इंटेंसिव रिडक़्शन , लेडले रिफाइनिंग आदि के लिए नयी-नयी तकनीकों द्वारा दी गयी चुनौतियों का सामना करने के लिए स्वयं को तैयार कर सके .

The Iron and Steel -LRB- major -RRB- Panel , 1946 , suggested that the steel prices , instead of being related to prices of imported steel , should be based on internal cost of production , including a liberal allowance for depreciation , and an adequate return on investment to enable the industry to be efficient and to attract sufficient capital for expansion . आयरन एंड स्टील ( मेजर ) पैनल 1946 ने सुझाव दिया कि इस्पात की कीमतें , आयातित इस्पात की कीमतें , आयातित इस्पात की कीमतों से संबंधित करने की लागत मूल्य पर आधारित होनी चाहिए.इसमें अवमूल्यन की अच्छी छूट तथा निवेश पर पर्याप्त लाभ भी शामिल हो जिससे उद्योग की क्षमता ठीक रहे तथा विस्तार के लिए अच्छी खासी पूंजी मिल सके .
