An ant colony usually contains the following castes : i . gynaecoid workers , capable of becoming queen ant if well nourished ; ii . numerous workers , which are of course sterile females , wingless and of diverse kinds ; iii . soldiers , who are peculiarly modified workers , with enormous heads and terrible jaws , armed with sharp teeth for crushing a foe ; iv . fertile females , who are large and winged ; v . fertile males . चींटी-बस्ती में आमतोर पर निम्नलिखित प्रभेद पाए जाते हैं : ( इ ) अंडदकर्मी श्रमिक जिसमें अच्छा पोषण मिलने पर रानी बनने की क्षमता होती है ; ( इइ ) अनेक श्रमिक जो दरअसल बंध्य मादाएं होती हैं जो अपंख और विविध प्रकार की होती हैं ; ( इइइ ) सैनिक , जो विशेष रूप से रूपांतरित श्रमिक होते हैं.इनके सिर बहुत बड़े और जबड़े भयंकर तथा तीखे दांत जड़े होते हैं जो शत्रु को कुचल देने के काम आते हैं ; ( इव् ) अबंध्य मादाएं जो बड़ी और सपंख होती हैं ; और ( व् ) बंध्य नर .
