His cross-examination of witnesses was slow , careful and thorough , and he managed his questions in a manner so that the judge and the jury themselves saw the logic , or illogic , of the witnesses ' statements . गवाहों से उनकी जिरह धीमी , सतर्क और संपूर्ण होती थी और वह अपने प्रश्नों को इस प्रकार संभालते थे कि जज और जूरी दोनों स्वयं ही गवाह के बयानों की तर्कसंगति या असंग़ति को देख सकते थे .

He appealed to the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court , on behalf of the thirty-one accused that their case should be transferred to Allahabad High Court and their trial be held before a jury . उन्होंने इलाहाबाद उच्च न्यायालय के मुख़्य न्यायाधीश को 31 अभियुक़्तों की तरफ से यह अपील की , कि उनका मुकदमा इलाहाबाद उच्च न्यायालय में स्थानांतरित कर दिया जाये और उसके लिए एक जूरी बिठाई जाये .

During the entire period of the trial most of the accused were refused bail and despite several attempts by the defendants , a trial by jury was denied on flimsy grounds . मुकदमे की पूरी सुनवाई के दौरान अधिकांश अभियुक़्तों की जमानत नहीं की गयी थी और प्रतिवादियों की कई कोशिशों के बावजूद जूरी द्वारा मुकदमा चलाए जाने की उनकी मांग को तुच्छ कारणों से अस्वीकृत कर दिया गया था .

He further stated that he was not ” in favour of a jury trial since a jury would be asked to follow and to understand a very large number of documents . .. a super-human task to ask any member of the jury . उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि वे ” जूरी द्वारा मुकदमा चलाने के पक्ष में नहीं हैं क़्योंकि जूरी को असंख़्य दस्तावेजों को पढ़ना और समझना होगा . . . जूरी के किसी भी सदस्य के लिए यह एक अतिमानवीय कार्य होगा .
