Raja Rammohun Roy had founded in 1825 the Brahma Sabha as a meeting place for all people , irrespective of caste or race , for the worship of One True God , without the use of any images or symbols or any sectarian ritual . But the movement had languished until this young intrepid mystic , with the sure instinct of a religious reformer , amalgamated in 1843 his new-born Sabha with the older organisation and renaming it Brahma Samaj turned the meeting place into a movement and what was little more than an intellectual club into a vigorous centre of a dynamic faith . राजा राममोहन राय ने सन् 1825 में ब्रह्म सभा की स्थापना द्वारा एक ऐसी मिलन स्थली बनाई थी , जिसमें किसी जात-पात और वर्ण-विशेष के सभी लोग आपस में मिल-जुलकर बिना किसी विग्रह या प्रतीक के और बिना कोई सांप्रदायिक कर्मकांड के एक साथ परमात्मा की उपासना कर सकते थे , लेकिन यह आंदोलन तब तक मुरझाया ही रहा जब तक कि इस युवा रहस्यवादी , जिसमें कि एक धर्म सुधारक की वृत्तियां मौजूद थीं , ने उनकी नवजात सभा को 1843 में प्राचीन संस्था के साथ संयुक्त कर इसे ब्रह्म नाम नहीं दे डाला और उस मिलन स्थली को एक आंदोलन के रूप में और कुल मिलाकर कमोबेश बुद्धिजीवियों की एक छोटी-सी मंडली को सुदृढ़ आस्था के जीवंत केंद्र में परिवर्तित न कर दिया .
