This sort of boosterism and puffery has a long history among Palestinians. The last time Israeli forces did real damage to the Palestinian war machine, in May 2002, for example, Khaled Meshaal of Hamas announced that the Israeli devastation was actually “a Palestinian victory that lifted the morale of our people.” Not to be outdone, Yasser Arafat of the Palestinian Authority (P.A.) claimed that same month, “The more destruction I see, the stronger I get.” इस प्रकार उत्साह बढ़ाने वाली झूठी प्रशंसा फिलीस्तीनियों के मध्य आम बात है. अन्तिम बार जब मई 2002 में इजरायली सेना ने फिलीस्तीनी युद्ध शक्ति को घातक क्षति पहुँचाई थी तो हमास के खालिद मासेह ने घोषणा की थी कि इजरायल द्वारा पहुँचाई गई क्षति तो वास्तव में फीलीस्तीनियों की विजय है क्योंकि इस विनाश से उनका मनोबल ऊँचा हुआ है. फिलीस्तीनी अथारिटी के यासर अराफात ने भी इसी माह दावा किया कि जितनी बार वे विनाश देखते हैं उनका इरादा और मजबूत होता है.

With loyalties now in play, wars are decided more on the Op Ed pages and less on the battlefield. Good arguments, eloquent rhetoric, subtle spin-doctoring, and strong poll numbers count more than taking a hill or crossing a river. Solidarity, morale, loyalty, and understanding are the new steel, rubber, oil, and ammunition. Opinion leaders are the new flag and general officers. Those goals are simple, static, and binary. The Arabs fight to eliminate Israel; Israel fights to win the acceptance of its neighbors. The first is offensive in intent; the second is defensive. The former is barbaric, and the latter civilized. For nearly 60 years, Arab rejectionists, now joined by Iranian and leftist counterparts, have tried to eliminate Israel through multiple strategies: they work to undermine its legitimacy intellectually, overwhelm it demographically, isolate it economically, restrain its defenses diplomatically, fight it conventionally, demoralize it with terror, and threaten to destroy it with WMDs. While the enemies of Israel have pursued their goals with energy and will, they have met few successes. प्रायः 60 वर्षों से अरब के लोग जो इजरायल को मान्यता नहीं देते वे अपने ईरानी औ वामपंथी मित्र्रों के साथ इजरायल को अनेक रणनीतियों के द्वारा नष्ट करने का प्रयास करते हैं उनका प्रयास होता है कि वे बौद्धिक आधार पर इसकी विधिक मान्यता को कमतर करें, भूजनाँकिकी आधार पर यहाँ बढोत्तरी करें, आर्थिक आधार पर इसे अलग थलग कर दें, कूटनीतिक आधार पर इसकी रक्षात्मकता को रोकें, इससे परम्परागत आधार पर लडें, आतंक के आधार इसका मनोबल तोडें और जसंहारक हथियारों के आधार पर इसे नष्ट करने की धमकी दें। जब एक ओर इजरायल के शत्रुओं ने अपने लक्ष्य को पूरी ऊर्जा और इच्छा के साथ प्राप्त करने का प्रयास किया है और उन्हें कुछ सफलता भी मिली है।
