Owing to the heavy discharge of effluents from the tanneries into river Palar -LRB- once a prime drinking water source -RRB- , it has become a drain and is called pazhar -LRB- river of wastes -RRB- . चमड़ा शोधन इकाइयों से काफी अधिक मात्रा में अपशिष्ट पदार्थ पलार नदी ( जो पहले पीने के पानी का मुख्य स्रोत थी ) में डालने से वह एक नाला बन कर रह गयी है और इसे अब पझार ( कचरे की नदी ) कहा जाता है .

Agreements were reached with the three foreign oil companies , viz . the Standard Vacuum , the Anglo-Saxon and the Burmah Oil , and the Caltex -LRB- India -RRB- , for the construction of three refineries , taking India 's refining capacity to 4.3 million tons . इसके लिए तीन विदेशी तेल कंपनियों , तथा स्टैंडर्ड वैक़्यूम , एंग़्लो सेक़्सन और बर्मा आयल , तथा काल्टैक़्स ( इंडिया ) के साथ तेल शोधन कारखानों के निर्माण के लिए अनुबंध पर हस्ताक्षर हो गये थे जिससे भारत की तेल शोधन क्षमता 43 लाख टन तक हो गयी थी .

While the Swarjists were forging ahead in the Calcutta Corporation and successfully carrying out their obstructive tactics in the Bengal Council and the Indian Legislative Assembly , Deshbandhu called upon the Bengal Congress Committee , of which Subhas was the General Secretary , to organise and launch a Satyagraha movement to clean up and democratise the Tarakeswara temple in the Hooghly district of Bengal . स्वराजवादी जब इस प्रकार कलकत्ता नगर निगम में आगे बढ़ रहे थे और बंगाल कौंसिल तथा इंडियन लेजिस्लेटिव असेंबली में अपनी अवरोधक समरनीति को सफलतापूर्वक अंजाम दे रहे थे , तभी देशबन्धु ने बंगाल कांग्रेस कमेटी का-जिसके महासचिव सुभाष थे-हुगली जिले के तारकेश्वर मंदिर के शोधन और लोकतंत्रीकरण के लिए सत्याग्रह आंदोलन छेड़ने का आह्नान किया .
