To this number you add the years which have elapsed of the current shashtyabda or sexagesimal samvatsara , and the sum is the correspond- ing year of the era of Vikramaditya . . . . इस संख़्या में आप वर्तमान शष्त्याब्द के वे वर्ष बीत चुके हैं या ? षाष्ठिक संवत्सर ? को जोड़ दीजिए और उसका जो जोड़ होगा वही विक्रमी संवत का तदनुरूपी वर्ष होगा . . .. .

All these eras vie with each other in antiquity , the one going back to a still more remote beginning than the other , and the sums of years which they afford go beyond hundreds , thousands , and higher orders of numbers . ये सभी संवत : प्राचीनता में अपने को एक-दूसरे से बढ़कर मानत हैं और हरेक अपना आरंभ दूसरे से कहीं पहले बताता है और उनमें परस्पर जितने वर्षों का अंतर है वह सैकड़ों , हजारों बल्कि इससे भी ऊपर जाता है .

As regards the Guptakala , people say that the Guptas were wicked , powerful people , and that when they ceased to exist this date was used as the epoch of an era . गुपऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-त काल जहां तक गुपऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-त काल का संबंध है , लोगों का कहना है कि गुपऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-त दुषऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-ट और शि>शाली लोग थे और जब वे नषऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-ट हो गए तो इसी तिथि को एक संवत का निर्देर्शक्षण माना जाने लगा .
