The trabeculae of the tunica albuginea are more delicate, nearly uniform in size, and the meshes between them smaller than in the corpora cavernosa penis : their long diameters, for the most part, corresponding with that of the penis.

The tunica albuginea is applied to the tunica vasculosa over the glandular substance of the testis, and, at its posterior border, is reflected into the interior of the gland, forming an incomplete vertical septum, called the mediastinum testis ( corpus Highmori ).

It is still disputed as to what causes the excessive'leakiness'characteristic of the condition, however it is mostly thought that the defect is in the connective tissue of the tunica albuginea surrounding the penile veins, most importantly the Deep Dorsal Vein of the penis.

In a study documenting the clitoral structure of mice, it was found that the mouse perineal urethra is surrounded by erectile tissue forming the bulbs of the clitoris, similar to the anatomy of human females : " In the mouse, as in human females, tissue organization in the corpora cavernosa of the clitoris is essentially similar to that of the penis except for the absence of a subalbugineal layer interposed between the tunica albuginea and the erectile tissue ."
