The authoritative “Encyclopaedia of Islam” defines jihad as “military action with the object of the expansion of Islam,” and finds that it “has principally an offensive character.” The scholar Bat Ye'or explains for non-Muslims through history this has meant “war, dispossession . . . slavery and death.” That does indeed sound like “something that should make someone feel uncomfortable.” हाँ तो ऐसा है। आधिकारिक “ इनसाइक्लोपीडिया आफ इस्लाम” के अनुसार जिहाद की परिभाषा करते हुए कहा गया है, “ इस्लाम के विस्तार के उद्देश्य के साथ सैन्य कार्रवाई” और इसने माना है कि “ सिद्दांत रूप में इसका आक्रामक चरित्र है” । लेखक बाट योर ने गैर मुस्लिमों को इसे इतिहास के आधार पर समझाया है कि इसका अर्थ , “ युद्ध, अवसाद..... गुलामी और मृत्यु है” । इससे तो यही प्रतीत होता है कि “ इससे कोई भी असहज अनुभव करेगा” ।

Aggressive Islam: The Koran and other authoritative Islamic scriptures do contain incitements against non-Muslims. The eminent historian Paul Johnson, for example, cites two Koranic verses: “Strongest among men in enmity to the Believers will you find the Jews and Pagans” (Sura 5, verse 85) and “Then fight and slay the pagans wherever you find them. Worse: those alive in 1948 are dying off and in about fifty years not a single real refugee will remain alive, whereas (extrapolating from an authoritative estimate in Refugee Survey Quarterly by Mike Dumper ) their fake refugee descendants will number about 20 million. Hedayet denied the validity of these confessions, but - given the nature of al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya, a group engaged in terrorism going back to the assassination of Anwar Sadat in October 1981 - their very existence should have raised red flags. For example, the 1992 edition of Patterns of Global Terrorism , the U.S. government's most authoritative source on terrorism, reported that “Most of the attacks [in Egypt] in 1992 were perpetrated by the al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya extremist group . . .
