Their report found that after metakaolin was reacted with alkaline in the presence of ground granulated blast furnace slag the two phases were formed; one consisting of mostly aluminium and silicon with the alkaline cation and only 1 mol % of calcium, and; the second phase consisting of silicon and calcium with less than 3 mol % aluminium.
