One 1841 reading ( by the Visconde de Santarem ) identifies the names of the eight islands as " Ylla de Osels " ( Ucello, Flores ) ( these last two would only be officially discovered by Diogo de Teive in 1452; Valseca apparently lifted these last two from the Catalan Atlas of 1375 ).

The first two leaves, forming the oriental portion of the Catalan Atlas, illustrate numerous religious references as well as a synthesis of medieval mappae mundi ( Jerusalem located close to the centre ) and the travel literature of the time, notably Marco Polo's Book of Marvels and the Travels and Voyage of Sir John Mandeville.

In the more accurately-drawn portolan charts, starting with the 1367 chart of Domenico and Francesco Pizzigano and carried on in the 1375 Catalan Atlas, the 1413 chart of Mecia de Viladestes, etc . the " River of Gold " is depicted ( if only speculatively ), draining into the Atlantic Ocean somewhere just south of Cape Bojador.
