Feb. 6, 2008 update : Five years after his brief jailing, Abdullah al-Kidd finds himself ordered by U.S. District Judge Mikel Williams to engage in settlement talks with the U.S. government over his suing it for wrongful detention case. Kidd alleges that he was falsely imprisoned and that the government violated due process, using material witness laws to arrest, detain and investigate individuals without first proving probable cause. On Feb. 12, the couple encountered each other at the television studio. At 6:20 p.m., Muzzammil went to the police and directed them where to find his wife's corpse. Officers found her body at the station in a hallway, decapitated and with multiple stab wounds. Hamas partially concurs: One leader, Ismail Haniyeh , hopes Gaza can “move toward economic disengagement from the Israeli occupation,” while another, Ahmad Youssef , wants the Gaza-Egypt border opened to trade and Egypt to serve as Gaza's “ gateway ” to the outside world. As Hamas promises that Cairo's re-closing the wall on Feb. 3 will not turn back the clock, Egypt's Muslim Brethren , a Hamas ally, demands the Gaza border be opened. Can Mubarak ignore these demands, popular among Egyptians? Feb. 9, 2004 update : Hawash was sentenced today to seven years in prison , a reduced term because he cooperated with authorities. “I do not blame anybody else except myself,” he told the court. “It's something I have done that was completely out of my character.” Hawash also submitted a statement to the court in which he denies that Muslims were behind the 9/11 atrocities (“I had rejected the speculations and accusations that Muslims were responsible”) and explains that “the harassment and arrest of Muslims” that followed 9/11 caused him to experience “skepticism and resentment” against the United States. Then, despite “misgivings and mixed feelings,” he went off on his adventure to fight American soldiers. Feb. 7, 2011 update :The English-language UAE newspaper, The National , published today a hostile but informative article on Die Freiheit by David Crossland . Some excerpts: Germany has had no populist, anti-Islamic party until now. Opinion polls suggest a party such as Freedom could get some 20 per cent of the vote in a general election. A recent survey commissioned by Berliner Zeitung, a local newspaper, showed as many as one in four Berliners could imagine voting for it. ... फ्रीहिट पूरी शक्ति से इजरायल का समर्थन करती है और इसके बारे में कहती है, “ यह मध्य पूर्व में एकमात्र लोकतांत्रिक देश है। इस कारण अरब रंगमंच पर यह पश्चिमी संस्कृति का प्रतीक है। सभी लोकतांत्रिक देशों को इजरायल के आत्मनिर्धारक और सुरक्षित स्वरूप को बनाये रखने में अपनी सर्वाधिक रुचि दिखानी चाहिये। हम स्पष्ट रूप से इजरायल के अस्तित्व के अधिकार को स्वीकार करते हैं जिस पर किसी प्रकार की बहस सम्भव नहीं है”।

What now, as Netanyahu prepares to take office again? Neither his party's history, nor his own biography, nor his character , nor murmurs coming out of Israel suggest that he will keep his electoral promises. Indeed, Netanyahu already flunked his first test: after 65 of Israel's 120 members of parliament informed President Shimon Peres that they supported Netanyahu for prime minister, Peres on Feb. 20 gave Netanyahu a chance to form a government. अब क्या जब कि नेतन्याहू फिर से पद पर आ रहे हैं? न तो उनके दल का इतिहास, न तो उनकी आत्मकथा , न तो उनका चरित्र या फिर जो कानाफूसी इजरायल से बाहर आ रही है उससे लगता है कि वे अपने वायदों पर खरे उतरेंगे। नेतन्याहू ने पहली परीक्षा तो पास कर ली है जबकि इजरायल की संसद के 120 सदस्यों में 65 ने राष्ट्रपति शिमोन पेरेज को लिखकर दे दिया है कि वे नेतन्याहू का प्रधानमंत्री के रूप में समर्थन करते हैं, पेरेज 20 फरवरी को नेतन्याहू को सरकार बनाने का अवसर प्रदान करेंगे।

Feb. 21, 2008 update : A nasty attack by an Australian blogger named Irfan Yusuf has appeared; his long analysis accuses me of a mistake in the caption to the picture that accompanies this column. The caption, seen above, reads: “Australian Human Rights Commissioner Graeme Innes and his guide dog. Innes is often denied service by taxi drivers.” Yusuf jumps on me, saying that “It is unclear how Mr Pipes reached this conclusion about Commissioner Innes,” concluding that I “misrepresented” Innes. नेत्रहीनों के लिये कुत्तों का उपयोग एक पथ प्रदर्शक के रूप में होने का विषय उन अनेक विषयों में से मात्र एक है, अन्य विषय महिलाओं से सम्बन्धित हैं जैसे पति का पत्नी को मारना- पीटना, बुर्का से सिर ढँकना, महिलाओं का खतना करना और परिवार के सम्मान में महिलाओं की हत्या आनर किलिंग के नाम पर करना। पश्चिम की एकता इस्लामवादियों को गुलामी और शरियत प्रेरित वित्तीय व्यवस्था में भी अपनी प्राथमिकताओं को छोड्ने के लिये बाध्य कर सकती है।
