Also I know from reading the literature ( I'm a chemistry student ) that plants appear fix the bicarbonate they absorb; presumably if they can absorb fulvic acids in organic fertiliser ( in mulch for example ) then they could absorb sugars or organic acids.

So-called " gray humic acids " ( GHA ) are soluble in low-ionic-strength alkaline media; " brown humic acids " ( BHA ) are soluble in alkaline conditions independent of ionic strength; and fulvic acids ( FA ) are soluble independent of pH and ionic strength.
