This is a step in the right direction, but like SPOT, it is just a start. Yes, young Arab male extremists have carried out most terrorist attacks in the West. Yes, focusing on observable traits like Arabic names or a Middle Eastern appearance is easily done. But, like nervousness, these are crude criteria that do not get to the heart of the problem, which is the Islamist ideology. A significant number of Islamist terrorists in the West are not Arab or immigrants at all. Their ranks include converts who began life with names like Ryan Anderson, David Belfield , Willie Brigitte, Jerome & David Courtailler , Michael Christian Ganczarski, Clement Rodney Hampton-el , Mark Fidel Kools , Jose Padilla, Adam Pearlman, Richard Reid, Pierre Robert, Jack Roche, and Steven Smyrek . These converts grew up in the West, speak Western languages with no accent, and know the local sports heroes. Some of them are even blond. प्रशिक्षित आतंकवादी सीख चुके हैं कि किस प्रकार अधीरता या अन्य कोई चिन्ह प्रकट करने से बचा जाए. पूरी तरह प्रभावी होने के लिए आवश्यक है कि इस रुप रेखा में अधीरता से कहीं अधिक आतंकवाद में अंतर्निहित तत्वों पर ध्यान दिया जाये. ये तत्व क्या हो सकते हैं यह बहस काफी रोचक और रचनात्मक हो सकती है.

I tested the domestic ground first, by giving a careful statement that if Israel moved forward toward the creation of a viable state of Palestine - a state acceptable to the Palestinians - then Pakistan would reconsider its diplomatic stance toward Israel. As I expected the media and the intelligentsia reacted very positively, whereas the man in the street could not have cared less. I was then approached by some representatives of the American Jewish community led by Jack Rosen, president of the American Jewish Congress, to address the Jewish community in New York. It didn't take me long to agree. Simultaneously, we saw discernible changes in the attitude of Israel's Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, toward the Palestinian dispute. He started the forced removal of Jewish settlements' from Gaza. When I saw this on television, I immediately sensed an opportunity. I thought the foreign ministers of Pakistan and Israel would meet overtly. We considered Turkey the best venue for such a meeting and also thought that the good offices of the Turkish prime minister could be used to arrange it. It took just one day to organize all this. The Israeli's eagerness to respond was very clear. To which my response is this: I am delighted to hear that Muhammad Ali did these good deeds. But by 2002 he was far along with Parkinsonism, so his decisions were largely made by his handlers in his name. These do not provide real insight into his character. That character, rather, was shown earlier, when Ali had full control of his facilities. To understand that better, I turn to Jack Cashill, author of the forthcoming book, Sucker Punch: The Hard Left Hook That Dazed Ali and Killed King's Dream . Cashill sent me a copy of the book manuscript and it, to say the least, confirms my thesis about Ali's poor behavior. The historic, groundbreaking meeting of the foreign ministers of Pakistan and Israel took place on September 1, 2005, in Istanbul. It was positive and was followed by my address to the American Jewish Congress in New York on September 17, 2005. The atmosphere was electric, and the reception given to me was very warm and welcoming. All the prominent figures in the American Jewish community were on hand. I met every one of them before the formal ceremony. This was a very big first: a Pakistani leader mixing with and then addressing the American Jewish community. The ceremony started with the Jewish ritual of breaking bread. Jack Rosen praised me in his opening speech. Congressman Tom Lantos read out and then presented me with a framed copy of the congressional Record of the House of Representatives titled “Tribute to President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan.” My own speech was emotional, and I think it had the desired impact. New ground was broken.
