The park contains the "'Queens Giant "', an old tulip poplar ( " Liriodendron tulipifera " ) that is the tallest carefully measured tree in New York City and probably the oldest living thing in the New York metropolitan area.

The park s underbrush began to be removed in 1921 and the natural oaks ( Quercus ), tulip trees ( Liriodendron tulipifera ) and sassafras ( Sassafras albidum ) were supplemented with shrubs, spruce ( Picea ) and pine ( Pinus ) trees, and flowerbeds.
