The area is now residential, Nelson Parade, and demands to remove it saw a plan developed to transport it to an old quarry area besides Badgerys Creek that was licenced to receive low level radioactive waste; however all such planning ceased as Badgerys Creek International Airport was decided upon to proceed.

Holmes Brown, executive director of the Low Level Radioactive Waste Forum, a national group representing waste generators from universities to utilities, said it was likely that many states " will put their planning processes on hold " and conclude that Barnwell will be available as a disposal resource for some time to come.

In 1996, Executive Order No . 1996-1 transferred oversight of environmental health programs " relating to drinking water and radiological protection " from the Michigan Department of Public Health to the DEQ, and Executive Order No . 1996-2 transferred the Low Level Radioactive Waste Authority from the Michigan Department of Commerce to the DEQ.
