The increase in BPH populations not only increases the incidence of RRSV within a field, but as the BPH become crowded they transform into long-winged migratory forms ( known as macropterous forms ) and spread RRSV to fields up to hundreds of kilometers away.

Lowered fecundity in macropterous females is largely due to the fact that the pre-oviposition, the period between the emergence of an adult female and the start of her egg laying period, for these individuals is more than twice that of the long-winged morphs.

A Swedish expedition collected a second specimen in a forest on the Brunswick Peninsula near Punta Arenas, Chile, and Haglund unknowingly described it as a new genus and species ( " Nordenskjoldiella insignis " ), but it later proved to be a sub-brachypterous female corresponding with the macropterous male described by Breddin.
