Populations of this species have historically been included in " Miniopterus manavi ", but molecular data published in 2008 and 2009 indicate this supposed species in fact consists of five separate species, including the newly described " M . brachytragos ".

It has been isolated twice from insectivorous bats, in 1981 from " Miniopterus schreibersi ", and in 1986 from " Nycteris thebaica ", and the virus is closely related to another bat-associated lyssavirus endemic to Africa, Lagos bat virus.

The Common Brushtail possum ( " Trichosurus vulpecula " ), and microbat species, Gould s Wattled Bat ( " Chalinolobus gouldii " ) and the Common Bent-wing Bat ( " Miniopterus schreibersii " ), appeared to be the only surviving native mammals in the area.

Threatened mammal species recorded in the park include the common bent wing bat ( " Miniopterus schreibersii " ), little bent wing bat ( " Miniopterus australis " ), the nationally threatened grey-headed flying fox ( " Pteropus poliocephalus " ), and squirrel glider ( " Petaurus norfolcensis " ).

In another molecular study, published in 2008 and using both cyt " b " and mitochondrial D-loop sequences, Nicole Weyeneth and colleagues found that examined specimens of " " Miniopterus manavi " " actually grouped in two, distantly related clades one including specimens from Madagascar, Anjouan, and Grande Comore, and the other occurring on Madagascar and Anjouan only.

At the palate's back margin is a long, thin posterior palatal spine . " Miniopterus aelleni " has 36 teeth in the dental formula ( two incisors, one diastemata ( gaps ) between the upper canine ( C1 ) and P2 and between P2 and P4, which are weaker or absent in " M . griveaudi " and " M . manavi ".

Populations of this species have historically been included in " Miniopterus manavi ", but evidence published in 2008 and 2009 indicates that " M . manavi " is a complex of five separate species, including the newly described " M . aelleni " . " M . aelleni " has been found in forests and caves in M . griveaudi ", also formerly included in " M . manavi ".
