This unprecedented edict - no head of government had ever called for the execution of a novelist living in another country - came out of the blue and surprised everyone, from Iranian government officials to Rushdie himself. Flames on Sept. 11 inside the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. The Rushdie crisis suddenly erupted when the ruler of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, put a death edict on a novelist for having written a magical realist novel, The Satanic Verses , declaring that the book was “against Islam, the Prophet, and the Koran.” That incident was then followed by a long list of similar assaults - concerning a U.S. Supreme Court frieze in 1997, American evangelical leader Jerry Falwell in 2002, Newsweek in 2005, the Danish cartoons in 2006, Pope Benedict XVI also in 2006, Florida preacher Terry Jones in 2010, and U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan early in 2012. The same utilitarian pattern holds in modern times. Ottoman neglect of Jerusalem in the 19 th century prompted the French novelist Gustav Flaubert to describe it as “Ruins everywhere, and everywhere the odor of graves. … The Holy City of three religions is rotting away from boredom, desertion, and neglect.” Palestinian Arabs rediscovered Jerusalem only after the British conquered it in 1917, when they used it to rouse Muslim sentiments against imperial control. Then, in 1989, Ayatollah Khomeini abruptly extended this double standard to the West when he decreed that British novelist Salman Rushdie be executed on account of the blasphemies in his book, The Satanic Verses . With this, Khomeini established the Rushdie Rules, which still remain in place. Such optimism, unfortunately, has little foundation. Europeans could yet rediscover their Christian faith, have more babies, and cherish their own heritage. They could encourage non-Muslim immigration or acculturate the Muslims already among them. But such changes are not now underway, nor are their prospects good. Instead, Muslims are cultivating grievances and ambitions at odds with their indigenous neighbors. Worryingly, each generation appears more alienated than its predecessor. Canadian novelist Hugh MacLennan dubbed his country's English-French split the “ Two Solitudes ”; one sees something similar, but far more pronounced, developing in Europe.
