The prosecution asserts he was in touch with Al Qaeda and in 2002 discussed ideas of eliminating Mr. Bush by getting “close enough to the president to shoot him on the street,” or by deploying a car bomb. Mr. Abu Ali's biography indicates how he might have ended up as an Al Qaeda operative. He attended the Islamic Saudi Academy in Alexandria, Va., graduating in 1999 as class valedictorian. As an outpost of Saudi values on American soil, the academy enjoys Saudi government funding, is chaired by the Saudi ambassador in Washington, and boasts a curriculum imported straight from Riyadh. एक प्रश्न उठता है कि आतंकवाद के युग में नागरिक स्वतंत्रता और राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा के मध्य उचित संतुलन कैसे कायम किया जाए .पश्चिम के प्राय: सभी देशों में यह बहस चल रही है .अमेरिका को ही लीजिए 11 सितंबर 2001 के पश्चात् आतंकवाद के खिलाफ एक जुट हो कर खड़े रहने की भावना कुछ ही महीनों तक चली . उसके बाद परंपरावादियों (conservative ) और उदारवादियों के बीच गहरी विभाजन रेखा खिंच गई.ऐसा लगा मानों इस क्रूरता से केवल परंपरावादी ही प्रभावित होने वाले हैं उदारवादी नहीं . इस विभाजन से पिछले तीन वर्षों में राजनीतिक कटुता बढ़ी है.
