The environment within the park includes mangroves, rocky and sandy shoreline, mudflats, salt pans, fringing coral reefs, lagoonal patch reef, seagrass beds, three islands ( Namponda, Mongo and Kisiwa Kidogo ) and numerous small rocky islets.

The " Montastraea annularis " patch corals that dominate here are unique to Ambergris Caye's northern lagoon and a rare occurrence in Belize; the only other such patch reefs in the country are located at Glover's Reef.

The Tuvalu National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan of 2009 describes the marine environment as comprising six major ecosystem types : oceanic, outer reef, lagoonal, back reef, lagoon floor, and patch reefs, plus natural channels between the ocean and lagoon.

Based on Badan Koordinasi Survei dan Pemetaan Nasional ( Bakosurtanal ) or Coordinating Agency for Surveys and Mapping, there are 33 dive sites disperses from north to south beaches of Togian Islands with fringing reef, barrier reef, patch reef and atol.

The reef is one of the best developed and healthiest reefs in the Caribbean, " with an emergent fringing reef, sloping fore reef with a coral rimmed shelf edge, vertical coral walls, and numerous patch reefs in the shallow central lagoon ."

Captain Tyrone guided us to an outer island for some kayaking and sightseeing, then later we moored over a pretty little patch reef and dropped in for an hour of snorkeling ( this is where we spotted a small nurse shark ).

The reefs in this area are narrow fringing reefs located 150 to 300 m . from the shore of the islands and patch reefs rising up from depths of 2 to 9 m . and extending up to 2 km . long and 50 m . wide.
