It was during these years that he made a reconnaissance survey for the United States Forest Service of a railway line along the Klamath River, California; served as Consulting Engineer for the Peoples Water Company, Oakland, California, and for the Los Angeles Railway Corporation, with special reference to valuation matters.

It was charted by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition under Gerlache, 1897 99, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1960 for Graham J . Hobbs, a Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey geologist at the Danco Island station in 1957 and 1958 who made a geologic reconnaissance survey of the coast between Cape Murray and Cape Willems.

From a base in Jackson Bay starting in the 1870s Douglas continued to explore the : Paringa River ( 1874 1877 ), Haast River ( 1880 ) and Landsborough River, Cascade River with Mueller ( 1883 ) and Arawhata River ( 1883 ), travelling with Mueller and Roberts on the " Reconnaissance Survey " from Jacksons Bay to Martin's Bay ( 1884 ).
