Today's Sudan took shape in the nineteenth century when the Ottoman Empire controlled its northern regions and tried to conquer the southern ones. The British, ruling out of Cairo, established the outlines of the modern state in 1898 and for the next fifty years ruled separately the Muslim north and Christian-animist south. In 1948, however, succumbing to northern pressure, the British merged the two administrations in Khartoum under northern control, making Muslims dominant in Sudan and Arabic its official language. आज के सूडान ने उन्नीसवीं शताब्दी में स्वरूप ग्रहण किया था जब ओटोमन साम्राज्य ने इसके उत्तरी क्षेत्र को नियन्त्रण में लिया और इसके दक्षिणी क्षेत्र को विजित करने का प्रयास किया। ब्रिटेन ने काहिरो से शासन करते हुए आधुनिक राज्य का खाका 1898 में तैयार किया और अगले पचास वर्षों तक उत्तरी मुस्लिम और ईसाई -प्रकृतिवादियों वाले दक्षिणी क्षेत्र पर अलग अलग शासन किया। 1948 में उत्तरी भाग के दबाव के आगे झुकते हुए ब्रिटिश शासन ने दोनों प्रशासन को उत्तरी नियंत्रण में खारतोम के अन्तर्गत कर दिया और इस प्रकार सूडान में मुस्लिम प्रभाव हो गया और अरबी इसकी आधिकारिक भाषा हो गयी।
