The surface must be smoothed ( e . g . with very fine sand paper ), deoiled with solvents, the solvent traces must then be removed and the strain gauge must be glued immediately after this to avoid oxidation or pollution of the prepared area.

Tools that may be helpful when bedding a rifle are : Long, replacement action bolts with heads removed, modeling clay, masking tape, electrical tape, inletting tools or Dremel, sand paper, stock vise, barrel vise or suitable holding fixture, cotton swabs, rags and cleaner / degreaser.

One method is to start with a sheet of brass shim or metal reclaimed from an aluminium drinks can or tin foil / aluminum foil, use fine sand paper to reduce the thickness of the centre of the material to the minimum, before carefully creating a pinhole with a suitably sized needle.
