Dr . Richard A . Carchman, director of scientific affairs at Philip Morris U . S . A ., said the plasticizer contained a half-dozen contaminants that set off a reaction in the filter that formed methyl isothiocyanate, or MITC, a chemical that is the basis for a commercial pesticide sold as a soil fumigant.
